Team: The Incredible Hulk, Warby, The Curse(c), Jay J, Lego, Jamey, Ross, Spud, Nath, Naylor, Cliffy
Subs: DWood, Crippled Craig, Si
A few enforced changes were made for this game. Tommy was missing through injury, Craig could only manage the bench thanks to a "fat knee" and Gaz had seen we were playing someone who would put up a bit more of a fight so decided to bugger off for the weekend. Great captaincy. Replacing the cat in goal was a monstrously sized human being. In fact the words "Brick", "House" and "Sh*t" could be re-arranged to describe this mammoth man. Spud returned from injury and slotted into the midfield with Ian making his debut for the season at centre half. Let’s be honest here, Ian's record when he plays isn't great. in fact, we haven't mustered a point when he plays. So from here on in I'll only refer to him as "The Curse".
The game got off to a stinking start. Every Archies man seemed to be half asleep and Sefton wasted no time in capitalising on that. Within 10 minutes they were two up. For the opening goal Warby stalled and waited for an offside that never came and the Sefton winger was able to steer the ball home past the exposed Hulk. Minutes later the setback turned to disaster. A cross from the Sefton left was swung in, the striker hopefully stuck out a foot and the touch wrong footed the Hulk who could do nothing as the ball crossed the line.
Sefton had the better of the remainder of the first half. Jean-Luc Picard, in their centre mid, was looking a danger at set pieces and went close on two occasions. From one corner Sefton nearly added a third. But the Incredible Hulk showed the reflexes of a ninja and tipped it onto the bar before the ball was cleared. Easily the best reflex save I've ever seen with my own eyes. So, even though The Cat has the most appearances in goal for Archies, he's now around the 5th best keeper.
HT 0-2
Archies came out at half time with a point to prove. Jamey was replaced by Crippled Craig in a shuffle around. In fact there were that many positional changes that I can't be bothered to provide them. Craig was on, that's all you need to know. Soon after the break Cliffy got the ball on the right wing, skillfully beat one man then burst past another into the box and was through on goal. He could only sky his shot over the bar. He would've been better off passing to the men in the middle, who all admitted they would've shot too. Damned if you do. It was certainly a better start.
Not long after that Naylor received the ball just outside the box and slipped in a through ball to the cripple, he heard the call from Warby, who was motoring into the box, unfortunately it was over-hit and Sefton cleared. The pressure was cranking up for Sefton. With the ball pinging around the Sefton box and challenging for a header, the cripple felt an arm in his back and quickly crumpled over like Ronaldo in a stiff breeze. PEN!!! (Superb decision by the so far impeccable ref). Nath and Cliffy squabbled over it, but in the end Cliffy won and stepped up to give Archies a life-line.....SAVED!!! Nath on next pen then? It was a decent strike and a good save, the keeper got down well.
Naylor was replaced by the returning Si. Not long after, Nath whipped in a delicious cross and Si met it with a thumping header. 1-2!! With 10 minutes to go Archies could sense a comeback.
They threw everything at Sefton and created a good few chances but the ball just wouldn't bounce Archies way. After an insufficient amount of injury time, the ref blew and Sefton hung on to their victory.
Highlight of the match: I like to keep this for comedy moments but the Incredible Hulk's save onto the cross was bloody awesome.
